Preserving Queer Spaces
As JKA designs buildings and places, physical, historical and personal context matter. These Pride month posters, seen over the weekend in San Francisco's Tenderloin, remind us that every person has rights, and every community has memories and history that add up to a larger whole. Part of our job as architects is to recognize and reflect this in our projects.
These posters reminded us that we were required and pleased to restore the façade of The Circus Room, one of San Diego's earliest LGBTQ bars that operated in the 1940's and 1950's. JKA is overseeing the restoration of the original red and white tiling, metal canopy, and clown mosaic that are now a part of the Found Hotel San Diego. We are proud to preserve both the physical space and the memory of this queer landmark.
