19th Venice Architecture Biennale

We made the Venice Biennale Architettura! Sort of. “Everyday Urbanism” (John Chase, John Kaliski, and Margaret Crawford. New York: The Monacelli Press, 1999, 2009) has been included in Places Journal’s “PORCH: A Library” at the U.S. Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale.

“Everyday Urbanism” includes essays by eleven authors and a book-length response to architecture and design practices that do not dig deep enough into existing City conditions, the lifeways of people that occupy urbanized locales, and opportunities to collaboratively improve lives. John Kaliski, with Margaret Crawford and John Leighton Chase, began their journey towards the book by organizing a 1994 symposium funded by the Architecture and Design Council of Los Angeles’ Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Above and Below: Urban Design, Urban Theory, and Urban Culture. SCI-Arc design studios taught by Kaliski and Crawford followed where everydayness was visualized. The means to document the SCI-Arc projects, write essays, and design the book were made possible by a grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts.
