25 Years of JKA: 2005
In 2005, when redevelopment and use of tax increment funding were still available for city building in California, JKA was asked by a developer to prepare a concept for the revitalization of Fontana’s downtown. JKA recommended a phased transit village located between an existing commuter rail station to the south, a rapidly vacating Main Street to the east, and a proposed light-rail station to the north. The Fontana Transit Village could bring new residents, amenities, lifestyles, and identity to diversify this City’s traditional center. The transit-oriented vision introduced a range of higher-intensity housing types, open spaces, path-ways, and civic functions to stimulate revitalization, support mass transit, reduce dependency on daily automobile use, and increase pedestrian activity and connectivity for all within the Downtown, and to the region.
