JKA 25 Years: 2013

JKA was asked to reposition and reimagine a 1926 hotel that had fallen on hard times and repurpose it as a short-term residence and classroom facility for The American Musical and Dance Academy Performing Arts College. The completed design maintains the appearance and configuration of the historically-listed hotel while bringing the interior spaces and 68 rooms and baths into conformance with contemporary code requirements.

The renovated structure includes all new building systems, a new elevator, ADA accessibility, a landscaped courtyard, lobby/lounge, two classrooms, game room, gym, laundry, and self-serve kitchen and dining area. The retained 1920’s rooftop sign and front facade blade signs lend additional character and reestablish the Gilbert as a residence for a new generation of entertainers.
