JKA 25 Years: 2021
In 2021, JKA developed new single-family residential design guidelines for the City of Downey that addressed the community concern that new construction within 1950s and 1970s suburban neighborhoods was out of character with the mass and scale of existing homes. Based upon public input at interactive workshops, JKA prepared guidelines that called for modulated and setback second-story massing, acknowledging prevailing single-story frontages, as well as new tract standards that emulated existing development patterns for remaining large infill lots. The work product is purposely illustrative and includes checklists to facilitate coordinated approvals between applicants and staff. The adopted guidelines were recognized with a 2022 APA LA Urban Design Merit Award.
