JKA prepared a City-and SCAG-sponsored specific plan for Fullerton’s “Rail District.” The 32-acre site is parallel to the existing Metrolink and Amtrak tracks and sits between the Fullerton Transportation center to the north and east, and the diverse Richman neighborhood to the south. Working with the City and stakeholders, the vision is to transform an industrial district into a residential, live-work, and commercial transit-oriented community. Three, four, and five story mixed-use and residential projects will open onto a shared outdoor “spine,” a continuation of the existing Union Pacific Trail and Bike Path, linking the transportation center to neighborhoods south and west. A restored historic fruit packing house and community garden will introduce new uses and activities into the District and enliven daily life. The objective, upon implementation, is to foster a transit-oriented neighborhood, related in scale to the surrounding communities, while providing increased housing, jobs, walkability, and recreational opportunities in the center of Fullerton.
